Crisp Apple Strudel

November 5th, 2010

I’ve been happy to welcome several new clients this fall!  Autumn is my favorite season, partly because it invites us to enjoy hearty, comforting dishes while nestled in our warm, cozy abodes.  Last evening, I prepared a 4-course menu for a neighbor who was entertaining co-workers at his lovely, mountain home.  In October, a highlight was providing the appetizer buffet for a commitment ceremony reception.  The service was held at a vineyard in Ashe County and was beautifully enhanced by the backdrop of changing leaves.  Next weekend, I’ve been asked to create a special meal for a couple celebrating their 10th anniversary in the privacy of their home in Valle Crucis.  Planning menus during this time of year is easy and fun due to the abundance of harvest produce such as squash, apples, and winter greens.  Apples, pears, cranberries, and ginger in puff pastry is my take on crisp apple strudel!

A few folks have asked where I came up with the name Bright Copper Kettles for my personal chef service.  While I’m amused they have to ask, I understand not everyone has had the delightful pleasure of watching The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews.  One of the most popular songs in the film is My Favorite Things.  The opening lines of the song are Raindrops on Roses, Whiskers on Kittens, Bright Copper Kettles, and Warm Woolen Mittens.  My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Deramo, used to play this song on the piano over and over while we 5-year-olds learned the words.  When I later fell in love with the movie as a teen, the song became all the more ingrained in my mind and I would often hum it almost unconsciously.  So, when I was trying to come up with a name for my business about cooking, which is one of my favorite things to do and learn about, Bright Copper Kettles seemed like an obvious choice!
